Gibbets: A New Monster for GURPS Dungeon Fantasy

In the cataclysmic battles of the First Age, it is said that the demon prince Beezleplix summoned creatures from other dimensions. The Gibbets were among these and were perhaps the failed experiments of an advanced biotech super soldier development program. Successive generations of them have only become more twisted and sadistic. They appear to live only to fight and if their taste for battle is not met by whatever warlord it is that attempts to harness them, they scatter for hundreds of miles in all directions, burrow deep into the earth, and enter a state of suspended animation that can last for hundreds of years. Ill-timed outbreaks of Gibbets have been known to lay waste to entire civilizations.

How big are these guys? Would they need Tunneling for their ‘burrow into earth’ ability, or something to represent their ability to go into suspended animation? Sounds like they all coordinate on when to erupt from the earth, too. Is that another ability?

I say ignore the last two (no significant game effects) but give them some enhanced digging. Can you picture it? Everyone milling about the courtyard of the castle at night, fearful of the sound of digging beneath them. Where will they come forth? When? How many are there?

Tell your artist to keep up the good work!

Size is about as big as a Tolkien-style dwarf. Small, nimble, and fast, though. I will probably give them burrowing speed at Move 2, some kind of increased healing ability due to the Dimetrodon fin, and then maybe something kooky like “Detect Battle”. I’m probably happy leaving the hibernation bit as a non-statted game master handwave unless I see something in the books that strikes my fancy.

I will pass along your compliments to the artist!

Out of curiosity, is that an 800-ton Mercenary Cruiser from Traveller landing in the background? That’s an element of Dungeon Fantasy that’ll surely turn things up to 11…
