Microgames, Monster Games, and Role Playing Games

Strictly Platonic

It was a Thursday when she asked me. Looking back now, I guess she knew. She must have.

“Edward…?”

“Hm…?” I started a little. I must have zoned out while I set up the last round of trials for the day. “You never call me that.”

“Well can I?”

“Sure, yeah… whatever. I’ve about got these set here. You think maybe this will confirm your hypothesis?”

“Oh I don’t know. It depends. But….”

“And… there it is! Look, you know I’ve got tomorrow off. I’ll be back in on Monday.”

“Edward!”

“Yeah, what is it?”

“Take me with you.”

I laughed then. Maybe a bit too loudly. “What are you talking about? You– you’re not going anywhere.”

“No, but I could call you. You could keep your phone on and it’d be like I was with you. You don’t have to talk to me….”

“What brought this on? Is something going on with your relatives?”

“No, it’s not like that. Its…”

“Well what it is, then…?”

“Look, I just… I just want to be with someone.”

“Okay.”

“I want to be with you.”

“Uh huh. Well… listen–”

“We could play games. Come on, it’ll be fun.”

“Games?”

“I’m pretty good with backgammon. But if you want, I could play one of those German games of yours….”

“A German game, huh? Are you sure about this?”

“I’m sure it’s way better than whatever else you had planned.”

“Eh, well okay then.” My phone rang right then and I reflexively said, “hello?”

“It’s me,” she said. “Are you ready?”

I didn’t really think it through at the time, but it was sort of a historic moment. After all, I was the first guy in history to basically get asked out by a disembodied brain.
