And a Terrible Wordsmith, Too!

I mentioned the other day that science fiction and fantasy fandom of today is divorced its own canon. This was scoffed at in some quarters, but it really is hard to deny it. If there was a shred of doubt left, it’s official now: the World Fantasy Award is now set to abandon its Lovecraft bust.
And do note the precise language of the petition that has helped bring this about. This is not just a matter of a group of people seeking to distance themselves from an author that is increasingly viewed as being “problematic”. This is not just a matter of a group of people wanting to give credit in the field where they believe it’s due. This is people that, in order to justify what they are doing, will even go so far as to declare that H. P. Lovecraft is “a terrible wordsmith”.
That is the lie that gives away just how how wrongheaded these people are. They are completely shameless. Politics and progressive views are now so central to how they assess quality, they can’t even acknowledge that the man they are in the process of unpersoning could write well. The scope of his influence and accomplishments count for nothing with them. It’s not enough for these people to denounce his unfashionable attitudes. They have to go so far as to repudiate his works as well.
This is completely asinine.

I recognize that you’re teasing me, but I’ll answer it seriously anyway; more that the leftist SJW’s will CLAIM they did, so that they can “unperson” them and remove any thought which is not pure from the totalitarian culture they wish to create.
If we are going to be expunging Democrats for being racist, we should be expunging all of them.
If Lovecraft is a terrible wordsmith, all us moderns are illiterate, and we might as well close every school in the nation.
Which might actually be the best thing we could do for education overall.
The choice is not between education and no education. It is not a choice between letting a union bureaucracy soak us for funds that aren’t an investment, and the quality of education getting worse. The time the kids spend in school has an opportunity cost. If the quality of the public school system is low enough, it is better to leave the kids alone and let them take employment.
No doubt about it, but I was pointing out that shutting it down and starting over might just be what the doctor ordered….
